EMMA FOOKS DOBBINS was born in Laural, Maryland on April 30th, 1926. She was the daughter of Irene Fooks nee Harrison and Raymond Fooks, the eldest of six children. Educated at Laurel Elementary School and later graduated from Lakeland High School. Emma was an A student and won a scholarship to Storer College, but she didn't like school and chose instead to go to work in Fort Meade, Maryland at Station Hospital. There she met her first husband, Soloman Rollins. They moved to Chicago and Anita Louise Rollins was born. Divorcing later, Emma and Anita moved to Ardmore, Pennsylvania to live with her sister, Agnes. While staying with her sister, Emma met and married John Dobbins. Of that union, Maxine Irene Dobbins was born.
Emma was an exceptional seamstress and often made suits for John, and dresses for Maxine. She utilized her talents at the Quartermaster as a sewing machine operator, where she made uniforms for all of the Armed Forces. She retired from the Quartermaster on August 31, 1989 and remained active by Volunteering for the American Red Cross. A faithful volunteer, Emma was loved and admired by all who came in contact with her. She was thrifty and encouraged saving among her nieces and nephews. Once she told Ros "if only a penny a day or a dollar a week put it away for a rainy day". Ros wishes she had taken her advice. Emma also enjoyed traveling during her retirement, always an avid traveler because of her husband John's military career; she continued to see the world with her travel group.
Emma was always available to help family members. Allen remembers him and Ira staying with his Aunt Emma for a week while his mother was in the hospital. Aunt Emma asked them if they wanted a snack and she brought them a tray with milk and animal crackers. They thought it was a funny snack for teenaged boys and laughs about it to this day. Aunt Emma loved her family and made it her priority to be at graduations and special occasions. She will be missed.
Emma departed this life to receive her reward with the Lord Sunday, July 24, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. in Wynnewood at Lankenau Hospital.
Emma was preceded in death by her daughter, Anita Rollins and her sisters, Mildred Irene Savage and Marjorie Jacqueline Fisher. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, John Dobbins; her daughter, Maxine Irene Dobbins; a grandson, Cory DeJuan Pinkston; two sisters, Reverend Agnes Louise Graham, Peggy Ann Toles; one brother, Raymond Lafayette Fooks. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to mourn.
