EDITH MARIE BLACK was born on December 2, 1927 to the late George and Lillian Ellis in Baltimore, Maryland. When she was very young the family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she was educated through the Philadelphia School System. In 1946, she met and married John Black, and from this union six children were born. Preceding her in death was her husband, John; brother, Joseph and youngest daughter, Denise. Edith’s grand children, who she was often in the company of, affectionately called her Nana. She was a loving mother and grandmother, the matriarch, whose door was always open to family and friends alike. Her home was often the gathering place for loved ones, a place where you could always find comfort, love and a great home cooked meal. It was at these times she was at her best. Edith enjoyed cooking, dancing, and an occasional trip to the casino. She was the foundation of the family. She leaves to mourn: five children, Edith, George, John, Paula and Brian; 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, a brother, Sam; son-in-law, Andrew, daughter-in-law, Cassandra Black; three sisters-in-law, Shirley, Greta and Dee; and many other relatives and friends. “EARTH HAS NO SORROW THAT HEAVEN CANNOT HEAL.” Sorrowfully, The Family
