The Obituary DOROTHY LORRAINE HUNTER entered this world on March 11, 1943 in Buford, Georgia. Born to Orena Hunter, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the young age of eight. As a child she was raised by both her mother and grandmother in a household that promoted traditional southern customs and ways. Dorothy, affectionately known as Dot by her closest friends, was formally educated in the Philadelphia public school system an earned a certificate of achievement from the Tailoring and Sewing Institute of Philadelphia. This certification enabled her to thrive in a career in the clothing industry for over 31 years while working at iconic institutions such as Robert Hall, Botany 500 and After Six. Afterwards she served as a supervisor at Five Star Cleaning Company for eight years until she retired. In 1959, Dorothy got engaged and married her high school sweetheart, Ernest Robert Dolison. This union produced three children; Crystal, Tina and Ernest, Jr. After living for a short while in West Philadelphia, they eventually moved into a house of their own on Jefferson Street in North Philadelphia. All the while, she had been a devoted member of Greater Ebenezer Baptist church where she was an active member of many organizations and ministries. After a long-term friendship, she remarried and was joined in holy matrimony to Herman Ferguson of Philadelphia, who she met while working at Botany 500. Herman and his daughter, Danette, immediately bonded with the family and formed a union that still lives on today. Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. She most enjoyed being with family. She gave great advice and was known to never hold her tongue. Although her favorite pastimes were fishing and gardening, she was mostly known for her cooking. During the holidays everyone would congregate at her house to get a taste of southern cooking at it’s best. Some of her best dishes were greens, fried chicken and chopped barbecue. Many tried to encourage her to go into business for herself as a gourmet cook. After the children were raised and educated, Dorothy and Herman spent several years together simply enjoying life. In 1999, Dorothy started to attend Greenwood Baptist Church and was given the right hand of fellowship in 2002. While there, she faithfully served as president of the Usher Board and lent her services to the kitchen committee. She could frequently be found participating in Unity Day and The State Rally. She immensely enjoyed the days when her family would join her for the annual Friends and Family Day. She adored her church family. Following a short illness, the Lord called Dorothy home on June 4, 2009. She leaves behind to cherish her memory: her husband, Herman Ferguson; her mother, Orena Hunter; two brothers, Earl Young (Sylvia) of Belair, Maryland and William Ellison of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; three daughters, Crystal (Robert), Tina (Robert) and Danette (Howard) all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one son, Ernest (Kyra) of Bowie, Maryland; ten grandchildren, Orianna, Amber, Crystina, Robert, Ambria, Vashti, Jeremiah, Danayah, Amirah and Howard Jr. She also leaves behind a host of other relatives and friends.
