The Obituary Genevie Baxter was born October 3, 1927 in Bamberg County South Carolina to the late John Henry Haynes and Emma J. Barnwell Haynes and entered into eternal rest on Monday, March l0, 2008. Two siblings, Conease Naomi Haynes Varnes and John Henry Haynes Jr., preceded her in death. At an early age, Genevie joined the Free Gift Baptist Church in Bamberg County. She was a faithful servant and enjoyed singing on the senior choir. Genevie excelled through grade school and her favorite subject was English. In 1947, she completed her high school education from the Richard Carroll Memorial High School in Bamberg County, South Carolina with a strong desire to enroll in college to study English and Childhood Education. In 1951, Genevie Graduated from Benedict College located in Columbia, South Carolina with a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts. On October 22, 1949, before she completed her college education, Genevie secretly united, in Holy Matrimony, with the late Byers Odell Baxter. From that union, three children were born. Byers Odell Jr. (Don), Linda Celeste and Wayne Renard Baxter . In the latter part of 1951, Genevie migrated north to Philadelphia and began a lustrous career as an elementary school teacher. She taught in the Philadelphia School District for thirty-five years, five years as a substitute teacher, twenty years at the James Rhodes Elementary School and ten years at the Frederick Douglas Elementary School. During her teaching profession and while raising three children, she managed to pursue a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Temple University. She received her Degree in l978. In the mid 1970's, Genevie left Tinley Temple United Methodist Church and joined 59th Street Baptist Church. Her ultimate desire was to do more than just attend church service. She became an active member as the secretary of the Guiding Light Missionary Circle, President of the Flower Club, Chairperson of the Church Anniversary, and a member of the Mother's Board. She loved everything about the Church and 59th Street Baptist loved everything about her. "Soror Baxter", so often called by her fellow Sorors, was an active member of the Tau Gamma Delta Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter of Philadelphia for over thirty years. She held various offices and chaired and served on many committees until her death. She leaves to cherish and celebrate her life: two sons, Byers Odell Baxter, Jr. and Wayne Renard Baxter; one daughter, Linda Celeste Baxter; one stepson, Marion Glover (Buddy); three daughters-in-law, Carolyn Glover, Tawana and Stephanie; eight grandchildren, Nneka, Christina, Erica, Romayne, Sabria, Christopher, Ashley, and Courtney; two great-grandchildren, Niomi and Nekhi; twin brother, Hector; one sister, Mildred; one step-mother-in-law, Carrie Bell; four sisters-in-law, Sally Mae, Genardry, Sucecile and Gloria Jean; eight-brothers-in-law, Everett (Vivian), Ernest, Roger, Albert (Essie Mae), Tom, Johnnie, Clyde and Jerry; along with a host nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Prayerfully submitted, The Family
