Emma Lena Davenport Montague entered this world on June 23, 1942. She was the first of seven children born to Warren Davenport, Sr. and Emma Clemmons Davenport. She received her formal education in the Philadelphia public school system, graduating from West Philadelphia High School. In July of 1964 she united in holy matrimony to James Thomas Montague, Sr. and from this union three children where born, Karen Regina, Kathleen Romona and James Thomas, Jr. Emma was also blessed with two step-children, Byron Fairy and Renée Montague. Being a very hard worker, she held various jobs throughout her lifetime. The most recent being the City of Philadelphia, Water Department, where she was well loved and highly respected. She remained there until she retired in 1999. She was an avid reader who enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, growing vegetables and taking care of her numerous plants she received from all of her loved ones. She also liked watching the Discoverery Channel and Court TV. She was a blunt person with a lively personality, When you encountered Emma, most people would be greatly amused, slightly offended, yet walk away from her feeling love and enlightened. She was truly the life of any party or gathering she attended, and could make a complete stranger feel like they knew her for a lifetime. Emma had various nicknames which included, "Nightmare on Emma Street", Mom-Mom, G-Mom (G meaning Gangsta) and the wife of Mayor of 56th Street. In the early morning on Friday, March 7, 2008, Almighty God in His infinite wisdom, closed the eyes of Emma Lena Davenport Montague. She was preceded in death by three siblings, Mary Davenport, Gail Davenport and Warren (Ricky) Davenport, Jr., and one grandson, Charles Montague. She leaves to cherish precious memories: her children, Karen R. Montague, Kathleen R. Montague and James T. Montague, Jr.; nine grandchildren, Sean (whom she raised as her own), Victoria, Sadé, Chanel, Indya, Lena, Walter, Jovon and Chantel; one great-grandchild, Dhamir; three siblings, Linda Davenport-Chilsom, Robert "Rabbit" Davenport and James "Skipper" Davenport; a special friend of twenty-five years, Charles Holley; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
